Did you know Sand Dollars are alive and move? Unless they are white, they are alive and it is illegal and you will get fined if you take them off the beach. In fact, the slits you see at the top are actually their “lungs” and they must be in the water to eat and breathe. The bottom of a sand dollar is covered with tube-like tentacles, akin to, but smaller, than those of a starfish.
A sand dollar can live up to six to ten years, so go easy on them and leave them be.
