Early this morning, we returned to the beach to say goodbye to the juvenile sperm whale who touched so many hearts here on Hilton Head Island.
Late last night, with experienced marine mammal teams by its side, the whale was gently sedated and euthanized — a peaceful and humane passing after a long journey. The specialized equipment needed to perform euthanasia was sourced from Florida and administered by a veterinarian from the University of Florida.
The whale, believed to be a juvenile and severely emaciated, likely drifted hundreds of miles before finding its way to our shoreline — an incredibly rare event on the Atlantic coast.
Its story is not ending in vain. A necropsy will be performed to help scientists learn from this loss and better understand the challenges marine mammals face. The whale will be respectfully buried following that process.
